These terms cover your use of ScotlandTourism.org. Reading the site means you accept them. They are written to be understood rather than to be impressive.
What this site is, and what it is not
ScotlandTourism.org is an independent editorial publication about travel in Scotland. It is not a travel agency, tour operator, ticket seller or booking platform, and it is not connected to VisitScotland, the Scottish Government, Historic Environment Scotland, the National Trust for Scotland, CalMac, ScotRail or any other body named in our guides.
Nothing on this site creates a contract between you and any attraction, hotel, distillery, ferry operator or tour company. Every booking you make is directly with that provider, on their terms, and any dispute about it is between you and them.
Accuracy, and the limits of it
We research carefully and we correct errors when they are pointed out. But Scotland’s tourism details move constantly: ticket prices rise, attractions shift to timed entry, ferry timetables are redrawn each season, rural bus routes are withdrawn, restaurants close, and the A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful does what it does.
So treat everything here — prices, opening hours, journey times, timetables, seasonal closures — as accurate at the time of writing and as a starting point, not as a guarantee. Confirm anything your trip depends on with the operator before you travel or spend money. We accept no liability for a cost or a missed connection arising from a detail on this site that had changed by the time you used it.
Outdoor activity, and taking responsibility for it
Several of our guides describe hillwalking, coastal routes, remote driving, wild camping and winter travel. These carry real risk in Scotland, and the risk is often understated by how accessible the country looks.
Our descriptions are not route guidance, safety instruction or a substitute for a map, a forecast and your own judgement. Scottish mountain weather changes faster than almost anywhere in Britain, daylight in December is short enough to catch experienced walkers out, tidal causeways cover, and single-track roads have no phone signal for long stretches. Check the Mountain Weather Information Service and the SAIS avalanche forecast in winter, carry proper navigation, tell somebody your plan, and turn back when the conditions say so.
Access rights come with responsibilities. Where our guides mention walking, camping or paddling, they assume you will follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code — including on deer stalking and lambing, on fires, on dogs near livestock, and on leaving no trace. You take part in these activities entirely at your own risk, and we accept no liability for injury or loss arising from them.
Our content
The written guides, itineraries and original research on this site belong to ScotlandTourism.org and are protected by copyright. You are welcome to read them, print a copy for your own trip, and share a link. You may quote a short extract with clear attribution and a link back to the page it came from.
You may not republish our guides in whole or in substantial part, whether on a website, in print, or as training or scraped input for a commercial product, without written permission. Ask us through the contact page; we are not unreasonable about it.
Photographs
Images on this site are used under open licences — principally from Wikimedia Commons — and each is credited on the page where it appears with the photographer’s name and the licence covering it. Those licences belong to the photographers, not to us, so if you want to reuse an image, take the terms from the credit rather than from this page. If you are the photographer of an image here and the attribution is wrong, tell us and we will fix or remove it quickly.
Links to other sites
We link out to operators and heritage bodies deliberately, so that you can verify what we have written at the source. We do not control those sites, we are not responsible for their content, availability, pricing or privacy practices, and a link is not an endorsement of anything beyond the specific fact it supports.
Advertising
We take no payment for editorial coverage. Nothing in our guides is sponsored, and there are no affiliate links on this site. Should display advertising be introduced in future, it will be clearly identifiable as advertising and will have no bearing on what we write or how we rank anything.
Liability
The site is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we exclude liability for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of it — including lost bookings, wasted travel costs and missed connections. Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud, because that cannot lawfully be excluded.

These terms may be revised. The current version is always the one on this page, dated at the top.
